I don't want to buy more than I need and waste it

The Question:

Looking for tips. I'm single, and am good at most meals. However, I prefer lettuce, tomatoes, and other produce on things like hamburgers, tacos, ect. Y'all get the point. But I don't want to buy more than I need and waste it. I freeze produce I can, but there are exceptions. TIA

What did people say?

  • ⇒ Ron: Buy some cut up produce from a grocery store salad bar. Might cost more per pound but you won’t waste as much food.
  • ⇒ Kimber: As my veggies are getting close to the end of their delectable, yummy stage, I dehydrate them, then grind them for my own “greens powder”. I then add a scoop or two to my smoothies. Win-win in my opinion: I’ve used the produce I had (instead of wasting it) and I had “free” green powder (which can be very expensive).
  • ⇒ Denise: Romaine lettuce will keep for a month, seriously if you wrap it in a little paper towel then roll it all up in tinfoil and seal it so no air can get in. Store in fridge. Don’t wash it or separate until you are going to use it. Tomatoes yeah that’s hard especially if like me you live way out of town.. I just buy a couple individual and eat them up before they spoil.in salad, on a sandwich or even add to an omelette . Peel and chop and make brushetta or fresh salsa. I like cucumber too and find it hard to use it up and I already have homemade dill pickles in fridge. Lol
  • ⇒ Leslie: Buy romaine head...it will last longer.....tomatoes if I have some going to spoil soon I throw them in taco meat or whatever I am cooking so I do no waste.
  • ⇒ Larkin: Romaine Lettuce, and cherry tomatoes. We slice the tomatoes thin with a filet knife for salads, sandwiches, tacos whatever. And when we think they'll go bad shortly, we pop them in our mouths as snacks or with some veggies dips. I always have a Yeti cooler in my car and fill it with whatever is fresh but *about to be* not so enjoyable. Having my fresh good snacks always handy makes such a difference with eating groceries quickly, and keeping at our goal weights.
  • ⇒ Amy: Romaine does last a long time. When it was just me though, I'd grow lettuce on the windowsill and just tear off a few leaves when I needed it and replant periodically. Other produce would come from the salad bar if I didn't need much.
  • ⇒ Melissa: Cut it up and place in a freezer bag or container. When full, add broth and make a pot of soup. Save your veggie scraps like onion skins, celery leaves that won't go in the soup pot, in a separate container. Add water to make veggie broth or add with chicken bones, strain and homemade broth.
  • ⇒ Dana: In truth, vegetables are so vitally important for health that I think the best course of action is to just eat up all your remaining fresh produce at the end of the week. Treat it like medicine.
