My STD insurance is dragging their feet on paying me. Any tips/tricks or advice!

 The Question:

I’m currently off work on short term disability due to a surgery. My STD insurance is dragging their feet on paying me. Any tips/tricks or advice for dealing with bills until I get paid. Our cushion was mostly wiped out with A/C and car repairs over the summer and we haven’t been able to rebuild it. We have a mortgage, two vehicle loans, and four credit cards. I tried to take a loan from my 401K (had been our backup to our backup plan) and found out since I’m not an active employee I can’t take a loan or any form of withdrawal.

Thanks in advance!

What did people say?

  • ⇒ Ruth: Ask car payments to move one or two months of payments to end of the loan.
  • ⇒ Joan: Try contacting your State Representative/Congressperson at their local office. Their office should be able to help cut through the runaround and get some answers. Also, contact your 401k directly to see what options might be available. Human Resources will deny, deny, deny.
  • ⇒ Wendy: I’d first call HR and see if they will be an advocate for you and call the STD company and light a fire. If needed call the mortgage and other loans and see about moving a payment or two to the end of the loan as a last resort. Good luck and hope they pay soon.
  • ⇒ Liberty: Keep calling them. Threaten to get an attorney if you have to. They pulled this crap with my SIL and it took almost 9 months for her to get a payment. She did not call all the time.
  • ⇒ Michele: Ask car load if you can defer payment for 2 months and add to the end , sadly minimum on credit cards and cancel all unnecessary things phone and cable , internet . If you cancel in 3 months time they will be calling with a great price to restart . If you can’t cancel sometime ti can freeze them for afew months . If your on std you will be back to work in afew weeks , if not sell everything you can . It’s difficult but down sizing is better then losing things . Maybe return a vehicle or get a lowered payment and cheaper on gas . If you only have one car , insurance savings . Bring in extra income , rent a room , there is penalty but you need to talk to someone else about 401 k that doesn’t sound right.
