I’m considering going with window units. Anyone else have experience with this dilemma?

 The Question:

Came home yesterday to a 90° house for the second time this summer (we’ve had over 101° for over a month.) I was told it will cost over $2000 to fix it THIS time. I’m considering going with window units. Anyone else have experience with this dilemma?

What did people say?

⇒ Katherine: Did you try resetting it by turning the breaker off/on? Ours has been doing this too lately. A quick fix is resetting it, which will help for a few weeks. Obviously not a solution though.

⇒ Rebecca: We just had to replace our entire system even though the old system was only 6 years old. We got several opinions and the one thing that really stood out to us was the fact that they all said the government has their hands deep in the HVAC world and they plan to put strict environmental regulations on HVAC stuff and the prices will go up at least 35-40% starting next year! We decided not to put another penny in the old system and to go ahead and replace before the increase. Some of our local HVAC companies offer 0% interest for 3-4 years.

⇒ Aubri: My central ac stopped working about 3 years ago. We don't have the money to fix it. We got a beefy window unit in the living room and a smaller one in out bedroom and it cools the whole house. It honestly hasn't affected our electricity bills all that much. Probably won't fix it until we get ready to sell the house in a few years.

⇒ Sandra: My AC was having trouble keeping up with the weather too and freezing over. I got one window unit and completely shut it off to thaw. After a couple of days I was able to turn it back on and it worked fine, plus the window unit is decreasing the work it has to do so it hasn’t frozen over again. That was in June and it’s been over 100 most days since then!

⇒ Diane: Check into mini splits. Far superior in cooling than window units and more cost efficient. They also aren’t loud like ACs. I love mine. Cool cool and keep it on 80.

⇒ Theresa: Oh my goodness!!! We have had it really bad here as well. If my central unit dies, then I will go with window units until I can afford to repair the central.

⇒ Dolcinea: We had to get a new system luckily Trane had zero interest for 5 years so we only had to make $90 payments. Our house is so oddly shaped the new unit still had issues cooling it with these 100 degree days so we went to Sam’s Club got a excellent deal on a small unit that helps us sleep great. It runs on 120 so it does not use too much power. Best of luck.

⇒ Serena: We have a window unit in our upstairs bedroom which is off during the day. One in the kitchen which runs all the time and one in the living room which we have not turned on this year.

We have insulated curtains in doorways so we only heat and cool the rooms we're using and we open them when windows are open.

The kitchen unit cools our kitchen and family room. The living room unit, when used, covers that room, the dining room, and my office. Keeps us comfortable and and saves on utility bills.
