Now! We’re purchasing solar panels for a house we plan to hopefully sell in the next year or two

 The Question:

My husband had a free consultation for solar panels. I was NOT for this idea. I was like whatever, I’ll let him listen to what they have to say, then I’ll talk him out of it.

The other day he tells me he booked an installation date. I said absolutely not, you’re going to call and cancel.

He goes to call and cancel and there’s a fee for canceling. $1300.

So now we’re purchasing solar panels for a house we plan to hopefully sell in the next year or two.

I can’t even explain how broke we are right now.

What did people say?

⇒ Dana: Just as a word of caution, I am a realtor (in Texas) and solar panels can make selling your house a pain! I have sold them with solar panels so not impossible. But buyers have to add that lease term and qualify on top of qualifying for the mortgage. Sometimes that can be a deal breaker. Some don’t want an extra monthly payment. Also, it does put holes in your roof. If you need to fix the damaged roof, the solar panels have to come off, be stored, and then be reinstalled. Which is not cheap at all.

If you are gonna move forward PLEASE make sure the lease is assumable by another person. Sometimes they are not.

If it’s not your forever home I strongly advise my clients against the installation of solar panels.

Just hoping to give you some insight into the future.

⇒ Ashley: Is there paperwork that your husband signed that says there's a 1300$ fee? If it's not signed, absolutely not. But get out of this, it's going to be 10x harder to sell your house with solar panel lease that has to be taken over.

⇒ Wendy: I think your MAIN problem is you AND your husband getting on the "same page" as far as financial issues go, or this wont be the ONLY problem you have...

⇒ Sophie: Depending where you live there is a cool off period after the signature of the contract.

⇒ Gina: Is he the sole name on the deed? Or both names? If both names are on the deed, challenge them as you did not sign or give consent.

⇒ Corrine: Not to burst anyone’s bubble but this happened to my sister and when she sold the house the contract listed the transfer of responsibility for the solar panels to the new homeowner and for whatever reason the solar panel company would not accept the change and she was stuck with continuing to pay or it would ruin her credit. It was a mess. Look at the fine print of that contract if you plan to sell and it is not fully paid off!

⇒ Tina: Not sure where you’re located, but I’d call them out on that.

Check on a provision where you’re located that covers sale cancellations. I think it might be within a certain number of days.

⇒ Kathy: I don’t think that solar company wants themselves on social media blast for shady business practices. Let them know your intentions.
